Thinking about entering a pageant? Here is what it actually involves
Most people who enter have never done anything like it before. A straight answer to the questions we get asked most.
Every year we have the same conversation, usually with someone standing slightly to one side at the end of an event. They have thought about entering. They are not sure they are the type. They ask a version of the same question: what is it actually like?
So here is a straight answer, ahead of Opera Indian Australian Diva 2026 at The Regency in Auburn on 27 September.
Who enters
The honest answer is: mostly people who have never done anything like it before. Nurses, teachers, students, accountants, mothers who have not been on a stage since school. A handful have modelled or danced before. Most have not.
There are two categories — Miss Indian Australian Diva and Mrs Indian Australian Diva — precisely so that being married, or being forty, or having three children is not a reason to count yourself out.
It is not only about how you look
The tagline is "where beauty meets confidence", and the second half of that carries more weight than the first. What actually distinguishes contestants on the night is presence: how they hold a stage, how they answer a question they have not rehearsed, how they carry themselves when something goes slightly wrong.
Those are learnable. That is rather the point of running the thing.
What you get out of it
A crown, if it goes very well. But the more common outcomes are less dramatic and more useful: a set of professional photographs, a network of twenty other women who went through it with you, and the specific confidence that comes from having done a frightening thing in front of a full room.
We have watched contestants go on to host events, start businesses and take on work they would not have applied for a year earlier. Not because of the sash — because of what they found out about themselves.
The practical bits
There is no fee to register interest
Registering costs nothing and commits you to nothing. You leave your details, we send you the entry form and what to prepare, and you decide from there.
Entries are limited
Places are capped and we work through registrations in the order they arrive. If you are undecided, register anyway — it holds your place while you think.
Bring someone
Plenty of people enter with a friend or a sister. It makes the first evening considerably less daunting.
